Why collagen isn’t part of our philosophy?

Collagen loss in the skin is caused by age, genetics, and deficiencies in vitamin C, magnesium or zinc – but also by stress, sun exposure, lack of sleep, and air pollution. By addressing the factors we can control, we can help slow this process. Collagen in dietary supplements is an animal-derived protein, primarily a source of glycine and proline. Glycine is one of the simplest endogenous amino acids – meaning the body naturally produces it. Proline is also endogenous. Unless someone suffers from severe genetic disorders or malnutrition, the body synthesizes these amino acids on its own – from basic elements found in all foods: carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Collagen lacks essential amino acids – the ones we must get from our diet. From an amino acid balance perspective, this makes it a low-quality protein. Hydroxyproline (a derivative of proline found in human collagen) is a non-protein, endogenous amino acid. The body produces it from proline in the presence of vitamin C. Thus, a hydroxyproline deficiency is more likely to result from poor diet or a lack of vitamin C than from low collagen intake. The Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology(10) concluded in a comprehensive review that “dermatologists should be aware that many claims about collagen lack scientific foundation.” The authors go on to say such claims are “particularly unconvincing” compared to methods that are proven to boost collagen levels – like sunscreen use, quitting smoking, and maintaining a healthy diet. Finally, collagen is of animal origin – typically extracted from leftover parts such as feathers, feet, combs, bones, cartilage, horns, hooves, claws, or fish scales. It is mass-produced under often unethical conditions. An investigation by The Bureau of Investigative Journalism(11) revealed that bovine collagen production contributes to the destruction of tropical forests and violence against Indigenous communities. Marine collagen is frequently sourced from cod, a species in population decline – endangering ocean ecosystems(12). It also causes social consequences. The documentary Stolen Fish tells the story of collagen supplement production in Gambia, which has triggered a deep economic and social crisis(13).
