Coenzyme Q10 is a strong antioxidant that is produced in the human body and whose beneficial effect on health is difficult to overestimate. You can find coenzyme Q10 in every cell of your body, and the largest resources of this ingredient are accumulated in the heart, kidneys, lungs and liver. 1 .
Coenzyme Q10 can be obtained from food in small amounts. Contains oily fish (including salmon, tuna), offal and whole grain products 2 . However, as we age, the coenzyme produced by our own body and the one we get from our diet becomes deficient. Supplementing this ingredient in adulthood is an effective (and safe!) way to replenish coenzyme Q10 deficiencies . Taking this ingredient helps reduce the risk of many lifestyle diseases and slow down the aging process of the entire body (not only the skin). At what age and in what form to supplement coenzyme Q10, you will learn from this text.
It is the only fat-soluble antioxidant known to science (at the moment) that is produced in the human body. It is essential for cell growth and maintaining their functions 4 , is stored in cellular "energy factories" - mitochondria . When it comes to the main tasks that coenzyme Q10 performs in the human body, two main roles can be distinguished : participation in energy production and antioxidant activity, i.e. defense of cells, tissues and organs against damage ( read more about the action of antioxidants in this article ). Recent scientific reports also support the conclusion that coenzyme Q10 influences gene expression 5 .
There are many applications of coenzyme Q10 . There are also many scientific studies that check its effectiveness and operation. There are several groups of health benefits and areas of use of this antioxidant. Here are the most important ones:
Coenzyme Q10 may help treat some heart diseases , such as heart failure and high blood pressure, especially in older people 6 . Coenzyme Q10 supplementation may also reduce the number of necessary medical consultations and hospitalizations in people with heart disease. 7 . It is also worth remembering that medical treatments used for heart diseases may additionally reduce the level of coenzyme Q10 in the body, therefore the role of its supplementation increases even more in such situations. 8 .
Oxidative stress that occurs with age also increases the level of inflammation in the body. All this creates conditions for the development of various types of cancer. The antioxidant power of coenzyme Q10 helps fight free radicals and reduce inflammation , i.e. reduce the risk of resulting diseases, including breast, skin and lung cancer. 9,10 . In turn, low levels of coenzyme Q10 in the body are associated with a higher risk of cancer and poor prognosis in people already suffering from cancer. 11,12, 13 . One scientific study also allows us to conclude that Q10 supplementation may reduce the risk of recurrence of malignant melanoma 14 .
The brain and its functions are very susceptible to damage caused by oxidative stress and free radicals. When the body's antioxidant levels drop, substances begin to accumulate that damage the brain and impair memory and learning. 15,16 . Coenzyme Q10 as an antioxidant helps reduce the level of oxidative stress , which may slow down the development of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. 17,18 .
According to scientific research, coenzyme Q10 taken orally improves the smoothness of the skin by up to 82% and is able to smooth wrinkles to make them less visible by up to 25% 19 . Coenzyme Q10 is related not only to the way the skin looks, but also to its health. Low levels of this antioxidant are associated with an increased risk of malignant melanoma 20 .
In addition, coenzyme Q10 can shallow and shorten the course of migraine episodes , as well as reduce their frequency. 21.22 . This antioxidant also supports sugar metabolism and prevents the development of diabetes 23.24 . Coenzyme Q10 also has therapeutic potential in health problems such as periodontal disease, mitochondrial disorders, obesity, AIDS, stomach ulcers, allergies, kidney failure, and muscular dystrophy. 25 . Supports the proper functioning of the immune system and physical fitness .
As we mentioned earlier, the human body produces coenzyme Q10 on its own. However, its level begins to slowly decline even before the age of 30 26 . In adulthood (around 50 years of age), additional supply of this ingredient from the outside becomes particularly important 27 - when the metabolism slows down, digestion deteriorates, the number and activity of mitochondria significantly decreases, and the risk of various serious diseases that we mentioned in the previous chapter increases dramatically (you can read more about the changes that take place in a woman's body with age in a separate article article ).
Numerous scientific studies show that supplementation of coenzyme Q10 in mature people is an effective means of combating oxidative stress , the level of which increases in cells with age. 28 . Q10 also supports the action of other antioxidants that are critical for older people - including: vitamins E and C. It is a key player in slowing down the body's aging processes , on many levels 29.30 , emphasizes gynecologist, andrologist and anti-aging medicine doctor Mariusz Łukaszuk :
“Coenzyme Q10 is one of the best-known ingredients with anti-aging potential. And quite rightly so. It is an essential link in the process of energy production in the cells of our body. It also has enormous therapeutic and preventive potential, including: in the prevention and treatment of hypertension, migraines, diabetes and many other ailments. I believe that it is worth supplementing with this ingredient after the age of 50.”
Coenzyme Q10 in dietary supplements available on the market comes in two forms - ubiquinone and ubiquinol. The former is the most stable and scientifically tested form with proven clinical effectiveness 31 . Ubiquinol, in turn, is a form of Q10 that circulates in human blood. Hence, there are claims that ubiquinol in the form of a supplement is better and more bioavailable. However, such opinions are not grounded in science. Numerous studies have proven that ubiquinone supplementation effectively increases the level of ubiquinol in the blood 32 .
In Nikalab Everyday Bases for women 50+ you will find ubiquinone derived from plant fermentation . We import this ingredient from Great Britain, from the renowned company Lehvoss UK LTD. It is highly stable and has been extensively tested for safety, absorption and effectiveness.
An additional positive effect on the absorption of coenzyme Q10 from nikalab supplements is the presence of Omega-3 acids . Q10 is a fat-soluble antioxidant, so when taken with fat it is better absorbed 33 . And the innovative DRcaps technology we use ensures that the capsule is protected against stomach acid and reaches the small intestine, where there are optimal conditions for the absorption of active ingredients. By choosing Niklab Everyday Base for Women 50+ , you know that the coenzyme Q10 you take will be absorbed and you will benefit from its benefits described above.
